5 Reasons Why You Should Not Use Shampoo.

It is a commonly held belief that shampoo is a necessary part of our personal hygiene. It's obvious, if you don't use shampoo for a few days your hair looks and feels greasy, it smells and your friends don't want to hang around with you anymore. These are all good reasons to use shampoo.

However, as Richard Glover wrote yesterday in Spectrum the above logic is in fact little more than a marketing myth! What shampoo actually does is wash out the natural oils in your hair, which your skin then tries to replace. That's why your hair feels so oily if you don't wash it for a few days. According to Glover, once your hair has been left alone for six weeks it reaches 'equilibrium' and you never have to worry about it again. He says he hasn't washed his hair for three years and that all is fine in the hygiene department.

I can think of five other reasons for forgoing shampoo use.

1. Money! Our obsession with shampoo has been fed by marketing. Why pay for something full of chemicals that are bad for you!

2. Shampoo doesn't hunt alone. Not only do we pay for shampoo, we've also been conned into paying for it's shady associate, conditioner, even though shampoo already contains conditioner!

3. On top of that, usually we use shampoo more often than conditioner, so if you shampoo your hair five times a week you only use conditioner three. This leads to a disparity in your shampoo and conditioner levels. Not only does your shopping routine become a slave to the whims of your shampoo bottle, but because you don't want to be using different brands you end up being tied into a hostile relationship with Garnier!

4. Most people think using shampoo is important. So if you don't use it they'll be pretty hesitant to stand within sniffing distance. Even though after six weeks no one will be able to tell the difference, let someone getting up in your grillz know that you haven't washed your hair for three years and watch them scatter!

5. It's bad for the environment! Probably. How could it not be, with all those chemicals running into the drain.
